OVER 1000 NEW BOOKS TO INCREASE LITERACY SKILLS

Overport Primary School in Frankston has purchased over 1,000 new books for their school library thanks to $12,788 in funding from the Dunkley Local Schools Community Fund.

Federal Member for Dunkley, Peta Murphy MP recently visited the school to see how the new books encourage greater engagement in classroom learning.

“This is such a great initiative. Each classroom will have new books to encourage reading and increase literacy skills” Ms Murphy said.

“Research shows that children read 50 to 60 percent more in classrooms with libraries than without them. We all know that reading expands horizons and sparks imagination.”

“Overport Primary School is a terrific local school. I’m very proud to support our community with this funding.”

Some of the new books include “How to Make a Better World”, “Putting Australia on the Map”, “Star Wars Jedi Academy”, “100 Women Who Made History” and the popular “Minecraft Annual 2019”.

The Dunkley Local Schools Community Fund delivers funding to assist schools with small capital works and equipment purchases.
